“What is the legacy of your cultural heritage in Texas?”
This is just one of the many questions that The Institute of Texan Cultures answers, giving insight into the past, present, and future. St. Luke’s Episcopal School first-graders were given first hand answers to their questions about San Antonio when they had a class visit from TITC. The visit was part of their examination of San Antonio’s tri-centennial celebration as they learned about history and points of interest in this great city.
On Friday, April 20th, the first graders culminated their study with poems they had written about their chosen point of interest. The Order of Declamations began at 2:15 p.m. as the students recited their poems and pieces of scripture.
The following poem was written and presented by SLES scholar, Madeleine McCabe, on her San Antonio point of interest.
Fiesta Texas
Up, up, up
You’re going to the top.
Down, down, down
You’re going to the ground.
Now you hear
The people scream.
Ahhhhhh!
Now you’re spinning in circles.
Now you’re seeing the trees.
Now you’re almost
Going to fall off.
Now you’re almost going to throw up.
Twists and turns
At the roller coaster.
Now you’re going in a tunnel.
You came out
And Whoosh!
You didn’t even know
That you went down to the ground.
Finally, the roller coaster is done.
Wait, it’s actually NOT done.
We’re twisting in circles.
Now, we’re going up and down.
All around.
Now you’re doing loopy loops.
This ride is crazy.
Swish, it’s done.
You’re finished.
You’re screaming wet.
