Each year since 1996, TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas has welcomed new students who are recipients of the Albert B. and Margaret M. Alkek Scholarship, a four-year, full-tuition merit award for rising ninth graders new to the TMI community who have strong academic backgrounds and have demonstrated leadership potential.
This year’s new Alkek Scholars are Rachel Davis, a graduate of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran School; and Teddy Lopez, a graduate of Randolph Middle School. Both are members of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) and were recognized by the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP). Davis won first place in Poetry Interpretation at the 2016 Private Schools Interscholastic Association (PSIA) district meet, and Lopez has been captain of his basketball, cross-country and football teams. Both have volunteered at the San Antonio Food Bank, at their churches and in other service projects.
Davis said she chose TMI because the school is “big enough to have the academic courses I want and a great theater program, while still being a small school with a community feeling.” Lopez said he was attracted by TMI’s award-winning Corps of Cadets, an optional JROTC program. “It’s my dream to go to the Air Force Academy,” he said, noting that two TMI alumni currently attend the federal service academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Alkek Scholars are expected to embody the core values of TMI by maintaining a high academic average, being involved in athletics and other extracurricular activities, modeling the highest character and integrity and exercising positive leadership inside and outside of the classroom.
The scholarships are sponsored by the Houston-based Alkek Foundation, established by the estate of oilman Albert B. Alkek, whose major gift made it possible for TMI to move in 1989 from Alamo Heights to the present, much larger Alkek Campus in northwest San Antonio. The foundation also supports other private schools in the Houston area and has made major contributions to St. Mary’s University, Texas A&M University and other Texas schools and hospitals.
“My grandfather made investments in the people and institutions he believed would excel over the long haul,” said foundation president Charles A. Williams. “We believe that the values instilled at TMI will cultivate the future leaders of the community and beyond.”
