Incarnate Word is a private Catholic school for young women in grades 9 – 12. Founded in 1881, by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, IWHS offers outstanding academic programs, a vibrant student life and spiritual development, competitive athletics programs and a dual enrollment opportunity at UIW. In the past three years, students have earned over $30 million in academic scholarships and provided over 100,000 hours of community service. Founded in 1881, by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Incarnate Word High School continues to offer excellence in education, athletics, service, and community to young women in grades 9 through 12. High standards of academic success and expectation fill the hallways of IWHS for our high-working student body with the Class of 2013 earning more than $11 million in scholarships to universities across the country. This year, seniors Alexis C. Johnson, Carolyn Petr and Rebecca T. Samaniego were named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program and seniors Madeline Finck, Felicia Pastrano, Lesly Ramirez, Megan Rodriguez, Giovanna Salzillo, Rebecca Samaniego and Monica Trevino were named 2014 National Hispanic Scholars. Incarnate Word High School students also perform to high standards in athletics and the arts. IWHS Volleyball and Cross Country continued their tradition of having several students earn TAPPS all state or academic all-state recognition. In addition, the IWHS softball team took the 2013 TAPPS state title. IWHS students also perform well in the fine arts arena. In 2013, the SAIW (St. Anthony and Incarnate Word) Theatre students advanced to state competition with their outstanding performance of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and the ever popular choir and madrigals continued to raise the bar with their show-stopping Christmas performances and state titles. Service to the community plays a very important role in the formation of IWHS students and each year they take time to support the under-served in our community. Over the past three years, students have provided over 100,000 hours of community service in San Antonio and the surrounding area. IWHS has a very active campus ministry who provide opportunities for students to grow in their faith by planning and attending retreats and liturgies offered throughout the year. IWHS is also committed to offering students a global experience through interaction with students from around the world through study abroad opportunities with UIW Preparatory School (UIW Prep), the online college prep high school operated by the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW). Students have the opportunity to study abroad through the Japanese and Kumamota Exchange Programs as well as at the UIW European Study Center in Heidelberg, Germany. In addition, IWHS will begin offering Mandarin and opportunities for a student exchange program with China. Incarnate Word currently serves students from China, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Mexico, and Australia who enjoy the academic opportunities Incarnate Word offers and the convenience of living on campus in our residence hall while enjoying learning the American culture and San Antonio favorites from their Shamrock friends.
